Is this the right workshop for me?

Introduction to Klezmer

We know that it can be difficult to decide if a workshop is right for you. To help you make the decision, here are two examples of music of the kind you’ll encounter in this workshop. One example is written and the other is an audio recording, because we’ll be working both with and without written music in this workshop.

Moldavian Yiddish Hora in C
Moldavian Yiddish Hora in Bb
Moldavian Yiddish Hora in Eb
Moldavian Yiddish Hora for Cello and Bass

There are versions of this for C, Bb, Eb and bass clef instruments. Please choose the one that’s right for your instrument and try a few times to play it.

Audio recording

Please  listen to the example once through. Then listen again, stop it whenever you need to, try to sing what you just heard, and then try to play what you’ve just sung. You can also use an app that slows down the music if you like. The goal is to gradually be able to play at least the first section of this piece.

How did it go? If you feel pretty comfortable with either one of these skills, you should feel comfortable in this workshop. If your reading skills are not strong but your ear skills are, that’s fine – reading is not a must in this workshop! If you found the audio example more difficult, don’t worry! The workshop teachers are very skilled at making it easier to learn by ear!

If you found both examples very easy, you might consider taking a more advanced workshop. But you should also take into consideration your knowledge of Yiddish music when you decide, not just your instrumental skills.
